The introduction of instruments not previously associated with jazz changed the overall sound. The flute became important as a jazz instrument, as did the French horn, oboe, and cello. The oboe and other double-reed instruments, new to jazz, fit in very well with the more standard instruments (trumpet, trombone, saxophone) when the standard instruments are played in a cool manner as individual instruments instead of as parts of a section. The tuba was brought into jazz for the first time since the very early dixieland period and was given slow-moving melodic lines instead of the familiar bass parts of marches.
